As the new Mercedes E-class sedan has become a cross between the S-Class and the C-Class, the same can be said about the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio and its relationship with the cars from its neighbouring classes. More or less.

Nonetheless, the new E-Class Cabrio won’t be a glorified C-Class Cabrio, like the current generation that uses the same chassis as the outgoing two-door compact Mercedes-Benz. The 2018 version will be based on the MRA rear-wheel-drive modular architecture, just like the other body styles of the E-Class. That means a lot more interior room and a boot that can actually fit other things besides a laptop case.

The E-Class Cabrio will follow in the sedan’s footsteps and do without the V6 engines in favour of the new modular inline sixes, as well as four-cylinder turbos for both gasoline and diesel. These units will be used up to the 400 hp mark, from where more serious powerplants take over. And: The future E-Class Cabrio has all the chances to receive an AMG version this time, powered by the 4.0-litre V8 engine developing around 600 hp here.

On the green side, the E-Class Cabrio will have several hybrid options for both four- and six-cylinder engines, helping boost maximum power to match the output from BMW’s tri-turbo inline sixes.

On the inside, the E-Class Cabrio will carry over the same dashboard layout from the sedan and wagon. It will also feature all the gadgetry offered for the new E-Class, including that “autonomous highway cruising” ability Mercedes-Benz was quick to announce at the beginning of this year. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio won’t be launched anytime sooner than the beginning of 2017, probably at the Geneva Motor Show.
